The beer market may be more experimental but it's still early days for flavoured brews

SINGAPORE — You don’t have to go far to see Singapore’s growing appreciation for craft beers. Especially with festivals such as this year’s Beerfest Asia, where you can sample a global variety in one convenient location. It is also a great place to sample the fruits of the local brewing scene, which is slowly but surely maturing.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height="15px"][vc_column_text]As you sample brews from all over the world at the upcoming Beerfest Asia, leave room for some home-grown tipples as Singapore producers are putting out some new drinks for the event. A Beerfest veteran, craft beer maker Archipelago Brewery, for example, is launching 10 new flavours, including Crouching Tiger, Flying Barrel, an ale fermented using three different yeast strains, pushing its ABV (alcohol by volume) to a boozy 15 per cent.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]On returning to Singapore after spending 10 years in San Diego and Michigan, Ms Keira Herr and her husband missed the huge variety of craft beers available in the United States. Tired of being "severely deprived", Ms Herr and a friend decided to set up Draft & Craft, a southern Californian restaurant and craft beer joint in Circular Road. Besides Californian food staples such as tacos and grilled cheese sandwiches, it serves artisanal beers brewed in small batches in the US.

Very little, yet very much, according to Ivan Yeo of Jalan Besar's latest dining spot, The 1925. "Running a restaurant was never really a definite goal I was working towards, yet everything I've done has led to this," the former head of a mobile gaming agency remarks.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Craft brews are all the rage these days, and the latest players are taking it up a notch by serving up beers freshly tapped from their on-site microbreweries. Debbie Yong and Georgine Verano mull over a pint at three new brewpubs in town. It's an oft-repeated tale of provenance by now: family X throws dinner parties with legendary dishes made from hand-me-down recipes, word spreads and soon, friends and distant relatives are hankering for more.
